3 Errors You Should Avoid In A Divorce

Brayden Miles

After years of watching divorces play out in the media, many people have unrealistic expectations of divorce. If you are one of those people, you could miss out on a decent ending to your marriage. To help you navigate the family court and divorce process easier, here are some avoidable mistakes people make based on their faulty expectations.

Not Being Open With Your Attorney

More than anyone else involved in your divorce, your attorney is the person with whom you should be open about everything. When you keep important information from your attorney, he or she could have trouble helping you negotiate a divorce settlement with your spouse. Being open also ensures that your attorney is not caught off-guard by your spouse and his or her attorney. If your spouse has potentially damaging information about you which he or she could use to hurt your case, your attorney needs to know what it is so that a sound defense can be created.

Allowing Your Emotions to Take Over

Divorces can be incredibly emotional. Feelings of resentment and bitterness from one or both spouses can complicate the process. Even though it is difficult to do so, it is important that you do not allow your emotions to make decisions for you. When you let your emotions take over and do not focus on what is most logical, you could end up making decisions that are bad for your case. Those poor decisions could be costly and end up with your spouse walking away with more than he or she deserved.

Placing Faith in Your Spouse

No matter how well you and your spouse are getting along, it is important that you be realistic when it comes to your divorce. Even if your spouse seems as if he or she is willing to be fair about settling the divorce, you need to be wary. It is very possible that your spouse could act only with his or her interests in mind. As a result, you could lose out on a fair settlement if you are not careful. You do not have to treat your spouse like your enemy. However, you should view this similar to a business transaction. Remember, you want to ensure that your interests are taken into consideration too.

There are many other mistakes that are possible to make during a divorce. Talk to your attorney about common mistakes he or she has witnessed and what you can do to avoid them.

Adoption 101: The Legal Fundamentals

If you've decided that you want to adopt a child, the first thing you should do is reach out to a family law attorney. While it may not seem logical to get an attorney involved from the start, it's important that you protect yourself legally from the beginning. After making the decision to adopt, I have been through the process several times. I created this site to help other adoptive parents understand what they can expect from the entire process, including the legal support you're likely to need. I hope this information helps you feel more confident in this major life decision.
